Habitat
Temperate grassland, tundra. From sea-level - 400 m.

Estimated population is 50,000 - 100,000 (2010).

Habits
In small groups on open ground at high altitude.
Voice
A harsh, half-whistled 'geuk-geuk-geuk' shortening to 'guk-guk-guk' and ending with a rolling 'rrruuuuuu'.

On occasion, two subspecies have been recognized, but orientalis, of north-western Mongolia, probably not valid.
