Nest
An untidy outer shell of dead leaves and grass, a deep inner cup with a fine lining, low down in thick vegetation.

4; bright chestnut or deep brick red.
Subspecies
Geographical variation largely clinal. Subspecies orientalis poorly defined, intermediate between nominate and albiventris. Birds from north-eastern Italy and Balkans east to western Asia Minor, larger than nominate and slightly more olive above and greyer below, described as subspecies sericea, possibly worthy of recognition.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
cetti (Temminck, 1820) - Western Europe (southern from southern England) and northern coast of Mediterranean (southern from southern Austria), throughout Greece and much of southern Balkans east to western and north-western Black Sea coast. Also north-western Africa (Morocco east to Tunisia).
orientalis Tristram, 1867 - Crimea and Turkey east to Iraq, northern Iran (foothills of Zagros Mts) and northern Afghanistan.
albiventris Severtsov, 1873 - Northern Kazakhstan (from Volga Delta and lower R Ural) east to L Balkhash and extreme north-western China (north-western Xinjiang), south to Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and north-western Afghanistan. Non-breeding southern Iran, southern Afghanistan and Pakistan (south to Sind) and north-western India (Punjab, Rajasthan).
