Narrow zone in Sahel zone from Mauritania and northern Senegal east to Red Sea coast of Sudan.

Subspecies
No subspecies.

Along with Arabian Golden Sparrow (Passer euchlorus) formerly placed in a separate genus, Auripasser. The two form a superspecies and in the past were often treated as conspecific. Some authorities include Chestnut Sparrow (Passer eminibey) in this superspecies, but this appears not to be justified.
