Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland moist forest, temperate forest. From 400 - 1,500 m.
China (mainland), Japan, Laos, North Korea, Russia (Asian), South Korea, Taiwan (China), Vietnam.
Vagrant to Thailand.
Central-eastern China and Japan. Non-breeding northern Indochina and south-eastern China.

No subspecies.
Chinese birds previously separated as subspecies lateus , reportedly having sharper division between jet-black nape and slaty-black mantle, more uniformly dark flanks and brownish legs, but characters apparently variable.
