Habitat
Coniferous, mixed and deciduous broadleaf forest on slopes.
China (mainland), Japan, North Korea, Russia (Asian), South Korea.
Vagrant to Taiwan (China).
North-eastern China and southern Russian Far East, Sakhalin, and throughout Korea and the main islands of Japan. Accidental to Taiwan

Estimated population is unknown (2012).

Voice
Highly vocal, calling by day and night from a perch and in flight. A far-carrying frenetic, shrill 'ju-ichi', beggining weakly but accelerating and becoming stronger and higher pitched 'ju-ichi ju-ichi ju-ichi'.

None. Egg(s) laid in that of the foster parents. The most common species are flycatchers.
Subspecies
Not recognized as a species by BirdLife International. Considered a subspecies of Malay Hawk-cuckoo (Hierococcyx fugax ).
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Malay Hawk-cuckoo (Hierococcyx fugax ).
