Subspecies
Subspecies differ considerably in plumage and it has been suggested that they be treated as two separate species, but apparent intergrades occur in a belt from north-eastern Brazil (Piauí) south-west through Mato Grosso to Bolivia.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

  • cayana (Linnaeus, 1766)   -  Venezuela, Trinidad, the Guianas, eastern Colombia, northern Brazil (Amazon and tributaries east to Pará and Amapá), eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru and Bolivia.
  • braziliensis (Swainson, 1838)   -  North-eastern, central and southern Brazil (Maranhão, Piauí and Pernambuco south to Mato Grosso do Sul and northern Rio Grande do Sul), northern and eastern Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba, Santa Cruz), north, central and eastern Paraguay (primarily east of R Paraguay) and north-eastern Argentina (south to eastern Formosa, eastern Chaco and Misiones, probably also Corrientes). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Eastern Black-tailed Tityra (Tityra braziliensis).
