Subspecies
Affinities uncertain. Has been placed in family Cisticolidae. Very recent DNA analyses, however, appear to support placement in present family, where should perhaps be positioned close to genera Chrysomma and Chamaea.
Proposed subspecies leptorhynchus (from eastern Qinghai and Gansu) rather weakly defined and seems to fall within range of variation of nominate and tentatively treated as synonym of latter.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
albosuperciliaris (Swinhoe, 1868) - North-western China from western Xinjiang east to western Nei Mongol and western Qinghai. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Tarim Hill-warbler (Rhopophilus albosuperciliaris).
pekinensis (Swinhoe, 1868) - Central and eastern China (south-eastern Qinghai and central and southern Gansu east to Shaanxi and north-eastern Sichuan, and from southern Nei Mongol and southern Liaoning south to south-western Henan and north-eastern Hubei) and northern Korea.
