Habitat
Damp mountain forests, favouring thick underbrush and lianas. From sea-level - 300 m.
Vietnam (B).
Population
Estimated population is 250 - 999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status CR
Habitat destruction through logging and clearance for agriculture, hunting pressure, possibly indiscriminate snaring are the main threats.

Voice
A low guttural 'uk uk uk uk uk' uttered in alarm.
Subspecies
Status of form hatinhensis particularly uncertain: discovered quite recently, and described as separate species, but on insufficient grounds and only ever known from a small area in Vietnam that is now almost completely deforested. Limited data available at present suggest that this form is probably best considered a subspecies of present species, although it can not be discounted that future research might indicate that it merit treatment as a separate species.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- hatinhensis Vo Quy, 1975 - North-central Annam, central Vietnam. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Vietnam Fireback (Lophura hatinhensis).
- edwardsi (Oustalet, 1896) - Central Annam, central Vietnam.
Similar Species
Like Vietnam Fireback (Lophura hatinhensis) but male lacks white tail feathers.
