Subspecies
Birds from south-western South Africa recently described as subspecies brookei, but this name is pre-dated by elegans.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
dyleffi Prigogine, 1952 - Eastern DRCongo (north-west of Lake Tanganyika).
oreophilus van Someren, 1922 - Western Kenya Highlands.
perpullus Hartert, 1920 - Angola, southern DRCongo and western Zambia.
shiwae White, CMN, 1947 - Eastern Zambia, south-western Tanzania and extreme south-eastern DRCongo.
tinniens (Hartlaub, 1870) - Zimbabwe, adjacent highlands of Mozambique and summer-rainfall area of South Africa.
elegans (Hartlaub & Finsch, 1870) - South-western South Africa (west of Port Elizabeth).
