Subspecies
Birds from north of range named as subspecies aquilonia, but description based on wintering individuals of uncertain origin, and slight colour differences seem unreliable.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
cedrorum Vieillot, 1808 - Breeds extreme southern Alaska and southern Yukon eastern across central and southern Canada to Newfoundland, southern in eastern USA to northern Georgia. Non-breeding regularly south to Costa Rica.
larifuga Burleigh, 1963 - Breeds south-western Canada and western USA south to northern California. Non-breeding southern probably to at least western Mexico.
