Subspecies
No obvious sister-species in genus. Proposed subspecies maynanus, from southern Peru and Bolivia, described as brighter ochraceous below than nominate, but individual variation prevents diagnosis.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
consobrinus (Sclater, PL, 1870) - Northern and western Amazonia in eastern Colombia (along base of eastern Andes southern from Arauca, in lowlands southern from Meta), southern Venezuela (western Barinas southern along base of Andes, also north-western Bolívar, Amazonas) and the Guianas south to eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, western and north-central Brazil (east to R Juruá) and north-western Bolivia (south to Cochabamba).
rufipileatus (Pelzeln, 1859) - Brazil south of R Amazon (R Purús east to north-western Maranhío).
