Subspecies
It has been suggested that brighter subspecies superciliosa, occurring adjacent to dark nominate subspecies (but apparently separated by Táchira Depression), may be a separate species. Birds from Cochabamba may represent a separate subspecies, as yet undescribed.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
superciliosa Sclater, PL & Salvin, 1871 - Andes of western Venezuela (Trujillo, Mérida, eastern Táchira). Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Rufous-browed Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca superciliosa).
fumicolor Sclater, 1856 - Andes of south-western Venezuela (southern Táchira) and northern part of eastern cordillera in Colombia.
ferruginea Zimmer, JT, 1937 - Northern part of central and western Andes of Colombia.
brunneifrons von Berlepsch & Stolzmann, 1896 - Central and western Andes of Colombia south to northern and central Peru.
berlepschi Hellmayr, 1914 - South-eastern Peru (Cuzco, Puno) and western and central Bolivia (La Paz, Cochabamba).
