Subspecies
Subspecies portovelae sometimes lumped with nominate because of similarities in plumage and poorly defined geographical boundaries between the two.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
atricaudus Lawrence, 1863 - South-western Costa Rica south to western Colombia.
modestus Todd, 1912 - Locally in central and eastern Venezuela (northern Bolívar).
portovelae Chapman, 1924 - Western Ecuador and north-western Peru.
adjacens Zimmer, JT, 1939 - Southern Colombia, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, and western Brazil south of Amazon.
connectens Zimmer, JT, 1939 - North-central and north-eastern Brazil south of Amazon.
