Status NT
Habitat destruction and degradation through deforestion, trapping for the cage-bird trade, and possibly persecution as a crop pest, are the main threats.

Subspecies
Normally placed in genus Ara. Forms superspecies with Blue-headed Macaw (Primolius couloni) and Yellow-collared Macaw (Primolius auricollis) and sometimes considered conspecific with Blue-headed Macaw (Primolius couloni).
