Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Grey Woodpecker (Dendropicos goertae) and Grey-headed Woodpecker (Dendropicos spodocephalus), interbreeding where ranges meet.
Proposed subspecies persimilis (Angola to northern Malawi) inseparable from ruwenzori.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
ruwenzori (Sharpe, 1902) - Angolan highlands, and eastern Zaire and south-western Uganda (Ruwenzoris and Impenetrable Forest), south to north-central and north-eastern Namibia, south-central Zambia and northern Malawi.
kilimensis (Neumann, 1926) - Tanzanian highlands: Mt Kilimanjaro, Mt Meru, and mountains of northern Pare, Usambara, Uluguru and Udzungwa.
griseocephalus (Boddaert, 1783) - Extreme southern Mozambique (Lebombo Mts) and eastern and southern South Africa (eastern Natal to southern Cape Province).
