Scattered localities in central Brazil, from Goiás to western Minas Gerais and southern Mato Grosso. Possibly also to be found in adjacent areas of Bolivia, where appropriate habitat of species is widespread.

Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with White-browed Guan (Penelope jacucaca) and White-crested Guan (Penelope pileata). All three were once considered conspecific.
No subspecies.
Similar Species
Rusty-margined Guan (Penelope superciliaris) which is smaller with unstreaked wing-coverts and browner belly.
