Subspecies
Proposed subspecies tschimenensis included in nominate tibetanus, and centralis within przewalskii.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- tibetanus Gould, 1854 - Pamirs and Tadjikistan south-east to western Tibet and Ladakh.
- przewalskii Bianchi, 1907 - North-eastern India to west-central China (Qinghai, south-western Gansu and north-western Sichuan).
- aquilonifer Meinertzhagen, R & Meinertzhagen, A, 1926 - Western Nepal east to Bhutan.
- henrici Oustalet, 1892 - Eastern Tibet to north-western Sichuan.
- tschimenensis Sushkin, 1926 - Kun Lun and Altun Shan Mts ( northern Tibet, north-western China).
- yunnanensis Yang & Xu, 1987 - Northern Yunnan (south-central China).
