Subtropical and tropical moist montane forest. From 1,500 - 3,000 m, occasionally 800 - 3,600 m.

Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Venezuela.

Population
Estimated population is unknown (2020) and decreasing.

Status LC
Ongoing habitat destruction apperas to be the main threat.

Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

canipalliata (Cabanis, 1874) - Andes of Venezuela, Colombia and Ecuador.
mercenarius (Tschudi, 1844) - Andes of Peru and Bolivia; one record from Argentina.
