Subspecies
Possibly conspecific with Mitred Parakeet (Psittacara mitratus). Subspecies frontata sometimes considered a distinct species, incorporating subspecies minor.
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
wagleri (Gray, 1845) - Western and northern Colombia to north-western Venezuela.
transilis (Peters, JL, 1927) - Eastern Colombia to northern Venezuela.
frontatus (Cabanis, 1846) - Western Ecuador and western Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Cordilleran Parakeet (Psittacara frontatus).
minor Carriker, 1933 - Central and southern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Cordilleran Parakeet (Psittacara frontatus).
