Coastal, including shorelines, dunes. heaths, oofshore islands, swamps, seldom venturing more than a few hundred meters from the sea.

Habits
In pairs or small flocks.
Food
Seeds and fruits of grasses and herbaceous plants, especially halophytic plants.
Voice
Sharp, tinkling, 'tsee, tzit-tseit', usually uttered in flight.

Nest
In a hole in a cliff or in a cavity under a rock.
Eggs (Guide)
4 or 5; white; ellipsoidal; about 24 x 20 mm. Incubation: about 18 days; by female.
Young
Semi-altricial, nidicolous. Fledge in about 30 days. They continue to maintain a loose association with their parents while in the flock.
Subspecies
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
- petrophila (Gould, 1841) - Coastal WA from Shark Bay to western Great Australian Bight, SA.
- zietzi (Mathews, 1912) - Coastal SA from Eyre Peninsula to Adelaide.
