Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with California Quail (Callipepla californica) and sometimes considered conspecific.
The following 7 subspecies are recognised:
gambelii Gambel, 1843 - Southern Utah and Nevada, western USA, south to Baja California, north-western Mexico.
sana (Mearns, 1914) - Western Colorado, west-central USA.
ignoscens (Friedmann, 1943) - Southern New Mexico and extreme western Texas, south-central USA.
pembertoni (van Rossem, 1932) - Tiburon I, in Gulf of California, north-western Mexico.
fulvipectus Nelson, 1899 - North-central to south-western Sonora, north-western Mexico. Possibly also south-eastern Arizona and south-western New Mexico, south-western USA.
