Subspecies
Genus sometimes subsumed in Leptopterus. Recent molecular-genetic analysis indicates that genus may be closest to Calicalicus, Vanga, Schetba and Euryceros. Comoro subspecies bensoni and comorensis possibly represent a separate species, differing from nominate in plumage and voice. Validity of bensoni requires confirmation.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

bensoni Louette & Herremans, 1982 - Grand Comoro (Njazidja), in north-western Comoro Is.
comorensis (Shelley, 1894) - Moh�li (Mwali), in west-central Comoro Is. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Comoro Blue Vanga (Cyanolanius comorensis).
madagascarinus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Madagascar (except central and south).
