Subspecies
Considered closest to Mauritius Kestrel (Falco punctatus ) and Seychelles Kestrel (Falco araeus ) in the Common Kestrel (Falco tinnunculus ) species group. A separate subspecies, aldabranus , sometimes recognized for birds from Aldabra Is.
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
newtoni (Gurney Sr, 1863) - Madagascar and Aldabra.
aldabranus Grote, 1928 - Aldabra and Anjouan Is.
