Extreme northern Australia, from northern Cape York Peninsula south to Weipa on west coast and to c. 140° S on east coast (including Iron Range, Coen area and Silver Plains), in north-eastern Queensland.

No subspecies.
Was previously regarded as conspecific with Frilled Monarch (Arses telescopthalmus) but recently reseparated on basis of very distinct female plumage and disjunct range. Forms a superspecies with Ochre-collared Monarch (Arses insularis), Frilled Monarch (Arses telescopthalmus) and Pied Monarch (Arses kaupi). Not recognised as a species by BirdLife International.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Frilled Monarch (Arses telescopthalmus).
