Subspecies
Usually forms part of assemblage referred to as subgenus Cookilaria. May form superspecies with Stejneger's Petrel (Pterodroma longirostris), White-winged Petrel (Pterodroma leucoptera) and Pycroft's Petrel (Pterodroma pycrofti). Has been considered conspecific with Black-winged Petrel (Pterodroma nigripennis) or Chatham Petrel (Pterodroma axillaris).

No subspecies.
