Subspecies
Possibly connects genus with Psilopogon, and has sometimes even been placed in latter. Allied to Great Barbet (Psilopogon virens), but not particularly closely. Subspecies not particularly well defined.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

rothschildi (Delacour, 1927) - Northern Laos and northern Vietnam.
lagrandieri (Verreaux, 1868) - Southern Laos and southern Vietnam.
