Derivation
Ö-ce-an-o'-dro-ma - Gk, from oceanodromos, ocean-running: Gk, matsudairae - Viscount Y. Matsudaira (1876 - 1945), committee member of Ornithological Society of Japan, who collected type-specimen

Habitat
Pelagic, adapted to warm waters, breeding in subtropical western Pacific Ocean and migrating through the Indonesian islands to tropical waters of the Indian Ocean in the non-breeding season.

Range (Guide)
Guam (NB), Indonesia, Japan (B), Kenya (NB), Northern Mariana Islands (NB), Palau (NB), Seychelles (NB), Somalia (NB).

Vagrant to Australia, Christmas Island.

Unknown to Micronesia [Federated States of].

Breeding at Kita iwojima and Minami iwojima in Volcano Is to Seast of Japan.
 
Population
Estimated population is 20,000 (2010).

Surface plankton, fat from dead whales or seals.

Voice
Generally silent at sea.

Subspecies
Sometimes considered conspecific with Black Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates melania).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Swinhoe's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates monorhis) which is larger and Tristram's Storm-Petrel (Hydrobates tristrami) which lacks a forewing patch, is generally grey in tone and has a more prominent upper wing-bar.
