Habitat
Subtropical and tropical high altitude grassland, montane moist forest. Also, aubtropical and tropical high altitude shrubland. From 3,000 - 3,800 m.

Mt Giluwe, Mt Hagen, Kubor Range (including Mt Kubor, Mt Kinkain and
Mt Orata, and Minj-Nona Divide), Bismarck Range (Mt Wilhelm), Mt
Michael and Kratke Ranges, in east-central New Guinea.

Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Habitat degradtion is the main threat.

Subspecies
No subspecies.
Forms a superspecies with Short-bearded Honeyeater (Melidectes nouhuysi), and both species, together with Sooty Honeyeater (Melidectes fuscus), are sometimes placed in a separate genus, Melionyx. These three, along with Bismarck Honeyeater (Vosea whitemanensis), comprise a group of medium-sized species that differ from others in genus in size, morphology, plumage and voice.
Similar Species
Fuscous Honeyeater (Ptilotula fusca) which has shorter bill and lacks beard, Belford's Honeyeater (Melidectes belfordi) (and Yellow-browed Honeyeater (Melidectes rufocrissalis) at lower altitudes) have shorter white throat-stripes, blue facial skin and shorter bills, and extralimitally, Short-bearded Honeyeater (Melidectes nouhuysi) which has shorter bill and beard.
