Subspecies
Subspecies poorly differentiated and thought possibly to be based on age-related differences, and species sometimes considered monotypic. A thorough review is necessary. Putative subspecies intensior (from Kunjapani, in Tamil Nadu) considered indistinguishable from nominate, and synonymized with it.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
icterica (Strickland, 1844) - Western Ghats (central Maharashtra south to Kerala) and eastern Ghats (Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu), in peninsular India.
indica (Jerdon, 1839) - South-western India and Sri Lanka (except south-west).
guglielmi (Ripley, 1946) - South-western Sri Lanka.
