Subspecies
Usually considered conspecific with Pycnonotus fuscoflavescens, but considerable differences in plumage pattern and voice sufficient to warrant treatment as separate species. Forms described as Pycnonotus chalcocephalus (Bantam district, in Java) and Pycnonotus cinereoventris (Tippera district, in Bangladesh) shown to be variations of grey morph of present species, and Brachypodius immaculatus found to be a variant of the yellow type. Island subspecies hyperemnus, baweanus and hodiernus poorly differentiated and in need of review.

Proposed subspecies major (north-eastern India) was described on basis of inaccurate measurements and is invalid.

The following 4 subspecies are recognised:

  • atriceps (Temminck, 1822)   -  Eastern Bangladesh (Sylhet and Chittagongs), north-eastern India (south of R Brahmaputra, to northern Cachar and Manipur), Myanmar (except north) and southern China (south-western Yunnan) south to southern Thailand, south-western Cambodia, southern Laos, southern Vietnam, Peninsular Malaysia and Greater Sundas, and western Philippines (Calauit, Dumaran, Palawan).
  • hyperemnus (Oberholser, 1912)   -  Western Sumatran islands (Simeulue, Nias, Mentawai Is).
  • baweanus (Finsch, 1901)   -  Bawean I (north of Java).
  • hodiernus (Bangs & Peters, JL, 1927)   -  Maratua I (off eastern Borneo).
