Habitat
Subtropical and tropical moist montane and dry forest. From 2,100 - 2,300 m.

Range (Guide)

Ecuador (E) (B).

Unknown to Colombia (E).

North-western Ecuador; possibly also south-western Colombia.

Population
Estimated population is <50 (2010).

Status PE
Habitat destruction is the main threat.

Subspecies
Forms superspecies with Coppery-bellied Puffleg (Eriocnemis cupreoventris). Doubtful species "Eriocnemis soederstroemi" is regarded by some authors as a subspecies or aberrant form of present species, or a hybrid of Black-breasted Puffleg (Eriocnemis nigrivestis) and Sapphire-vented Puffleg (Eriocnemis luciani).

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Among pufflegs, blue throat patch of male is distinctive within range. Female Glowing Puffleg (Eriocnemis vestita) has extensive cinnamon-buff on throat and breast.
