Subspecies
Relationships with congeners poorly known.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
viola (Gould, 1853) - Ecuador, Peru.
pyropus Weller, 2011 - Andes of southern Ecuador and north-western Peru (Piura).
splendidus Weller, 2011 - Andes of northern Peru (west of Río Marañón in Cajamarca. Also very locally east of Marañón in Amazonas?).
