Subspecies
Formerly isolated in monospecific genus Ionolaima. Probably closely related to Gould's Brilliant (Heliodoxa aurescens).
The following 2 subspecies are recognised:
schreibersii (Bourcier, 1847) - South-eastern Colombia, eastern Ecuador and north-eastern Peru (north of Amazon) to extreme north-western Amazonian Brazil (upper R Negro).
whitelyana (Gould, 1872) - Eastern Peru. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Black-breasted Brilliant (Heliodoxa whitelyana).
