Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster) and Copper-rumped Hummingbird (Amazilia tobaci) and normally considered conspecific with Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster), but morphological differences, especially in coloration of rump, uppertail-coverts and rectrices, in addition to disjunct ranges, support their separation as two distinct species.
Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster).
The following 4 subspecies are recognised:
- cupreicauda (Salvin and Godman, 1884) - Highlands and tepuis of eastern Venezuela, Guyana and extreme northern Brazil (Roraima). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster).
- duidae Chapman, 1929 - Southern Venezuela. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster).
- laireti (Phelps, Jr. and Aveledo, 1988) - Extreme southern Venezuela; possibly northern Brazil. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster).
- pacaraimae (Weller, 2000) - Mts. of southern Venezuela (Sierra de Pacaraima). Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Green-bellied Hummingbird (Amazilia viridigaster).
