Habitat
Subtropical and tropical lowland and montane moist forest. From 600 - 1,800 m, occasionally to 2,400 m.

Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua.

Estimated population is 50,000 - 499,999 (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies chlorostephana has been suggested as possibly approaching species status, but nominate (in east of range) shows clinal variation in crown colour towards chlorostephana. Birds from Belize south to northern Nicaragua formerly separated as subspecies guatemalensis, but specimens from central and eastern Guatemala, including type locality of guatemalensis, Duenas, show strong intergradation with nominate birds from Chiapas (southern Mexico).

Proposed species "Agyrtria microrhyncha" (Honduras, Nicaragua), known from two specimens and separated in part on basis of unusually short bill, does not merit even subspecific recognition because characters appear to be based on individual variation or juvenile, probably of nominate.

The following 2 subspecies are recognised:

cyanocephala (Lesson, 1829) - Eastern and southern Mexico to eastern Honduras and north-central Nicaragua.
chlorostephana Howell, TR, 1965 - Mosquito Coast of eastern Honduras and north-eastern Nicaragua.
