Subspecies
Forms a superspecies with Mexican Woodnymph (Thalurania ridgwayi), Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica) and Fork-tailed Woodnymph (Thalurania furcata). Species limits unclear, and all have been considered conspecific. Alternatively, green-crowned present species sometimes considered conspecific with blue-crowned Mexican Woodnymph (Thalurania ridgwayi) and purple-crowned Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica). This lumping supported by great similarity of these forms, apart from crown colour of male, and indeed male of present species shows some blue feathering at rear of glittering green crown which decreases with distance from adjacent purple-crowned forms. Also female plumages of present species and Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica) very similar. Distinctive subspecies hypochlora may be a separate species, or possibly referable to Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica). Subspecies subtropicalis may not be distinguishable from verticeps.
The following 5 subspecies are recognised:
- fannyi (Delattre & Bourcier, 1846) - Eastern Panama and extreme north-west to south-western Colombia.
- subtropicalis Griscom, 1932 - West-central Colombia, in Cauca Valley and along adjacent western and central Andes. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica).
- verticeps (Gould, 1851) - Pacific slope of western Andes of extreme south-western Colombia and north-western Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a subspecies of Crowned Woodnymph (Thalurania colombica).
- hypochlora Gould, 1871 - Pacific lowlands of Ecuador. Considered by some authors to be a distinct species, Emerald-bellied Woodnymph (Thalurania hypochlora).
- nigricapilla Valdés-Velásquez et Schuchmann, 2009 - Northern Colombia to Venezuela, Trinidad, Tobago, Guianas, eastern Brazil.
