Subspecies
Sometimes placed together with Spectacled Parrotbill (Sinosuthora conspicillata), Brown-winged Parrotbill (Sinosuthora brunnea), Ashy-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora alphonsiana), Grey-hooded Parrotbill (Sinosuthora zappeyi), Rusty-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora przewalskii), Fulvous Parrotbill (Suthora fulvifrons), Black-throated Parrotbill (Suthora nipalensis), Golden Parrotbill (Suthora verreauxi) and Pale-billed Parrotbill (Chleuasicus atrosuperciliaris) in a separate genus, Suthora. Considered conspecific with Brown-winged Parrotbill (Sinosuthora brunnea) and, especially, Ashy-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora alphonsiana) by some authors. Where range overlaps with that of Ashy-throated Parrotbill (Sinosuthora alphonsiana), the two species are sometimes found in mixed flocks in which occasional hybrids reported, e.g. in Vietnam (near Sa Pa, in western Tonkin), and hybrids seen also in north-western Italy (where both species introduced). In China, interbreeding reported in 1938 in central Sichuan, and a number of earlier specimens from that region were considered to present a range of features intermediate between the two species, but insufficient details available. Subspecies suffusus poorly marked, perhaps better united with nominate; elisabethae doubtfully distinct from suffusus (exact south-western geographical limits of which are unclear), and the single type was a specimen in full moult (colour, which varies considerably with wear, an unsatisfactory character for racial diagnosis). Entire Korean population included in subspecies fulvicauda, but those in extreme northern possibly belong with mantschuricus.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
mantschuricus (Taczanowski, 1885) - Extreme south-eastern Russia (southern Ussuriland) and north-eastern China (eastern Heilongjiang south to north-eastern Hebei).
fulvicauda (Campbell, CW, 1892) - Eastern China (western and southern Hebei) and Korea.
suffusus (Swinhoe, 1871) - Central and south-eastern China (southern Gansu, southern Shaanxi, central and eastern Sichuan, eastern Guizhou and Guangxi east to southern Shanxi, inland southern Jiangsu, western Fujian and Guangdong) and extreme northern Vietnam (north-western part of eastern Tonkin).
webbianus (Gould, 1852) - Coastal eastern China (southern Jiangsu and northern Zhejiang).
elisabethae (La Touche, 1922) - Extreme southern China (south-eastern Yunnan) and extreme northern Vietnam (northern part of western Tonkin).
