Range (Guide)
China (mainland) (B) (NB), Hong Kong (China) (NB), Japan (NB), North Korea (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), South Korea (NB), Taiwan (China) (NB).

Vagrant to Bangladesh (NB), India (NB), Mongolia (NB), Myanmar (NB), Philippines (NB).

Breeds in south-eastern Siberia and in parts of north-eastern China. Winters in southern and south-eastern China, with a few in Japan and Korea. Formerly bred in Japan and Korea.
 
Population
Estimated population is 1,000 - 2,499 (2010) and decreasing.

Subspecies
Until recently included in White Stork (Ciconia ciconia), but the two now generally accepted as distinct species.

No subspecies.

Similar Species
Adult White Stork (Ciconia ciconia) has shorter orange-red bill and juvenile has brownish-red bill.
