Habitat
In breeding season, cliff tops with deep soil for nesting burrows. In non-breeding season, pelagic.

Range (Guide)

Canada (B), China (mainland), Japan, Mexico, North Korea (B), Russia (Asian), South Korea, USA (B).

Akademii Gulf, southern Sakhalin and southern Kuril Is to Japan (Teuri I) and extreme north-eastern Korea; central Aleutians; southern and south-eastern Alaska (west to Barren I, Middleton I, St Lazaria I, Forrester I) south to British Columbia (Triangle I), western Washington (Destruction I) and northern California (Castle I, Farallon Is). Winters mostly offshore and along coasts, in Asia near breeding areas, and in North America mainly from southern British Columbia (casually from south-eastern Alaska) south to Baja California (Santa Margarita I).

Population
Estimated population is 1,300,000 (2010).

Voice
Returning to colonies a deep throaty, gurgling 'gugu gugu' and moaning 'woo woo' inrising and falling series.
