Habitat
In breeding season, cliffs.

Range (Guide)

Canada, Japan, Russia (Asian), USA (B).

Unknown to Mexico.

Chukotskiy Peninsula south to Commander Is, Kamchatka, Sea of Okhotsk (Matykyl I) and Kuril Is, and western Alaska from Diomede Is and Norton Sound south to Aleutians and east to northern Gulf of Alaska (Prince William Sound). Winters mostly at sea and along coasts, often at limit of open water near breeding locations, from Bering Sea south to northern Japan and casually to southern California. General pattern of distribution and limits poorly known.

Population
Estimated population is 1,200,000 (2010).

Habits
In non-breeding season, pelagic, usually alone but sometimes associated with Crested Auklet (Aethia cristatella) and Least Auklet (Aethia pusilla).

Voice
Rhythmic hoarse calls and descending whistles at colonies. Usually silent at sea.
