Habitat
Breeds on rocky coasts. In non-breeding season, ice-free waters off rocky coasts, headlands. Occasionally bays and harbors.

Range (Guide)

Japan, North Korea (B), Russia (Asian), South Korea.

Coasts and islands of north-western Pacific, from Kamchatka and Sea of Okhotsk south to north-eastern Korea, Kuril Is, and northern Japan (Hokkaido, northern Honshu). In winter, pelagic and coastal, usually near breeding locations and somewhat farther south.

Population
Estimated population is 140,000 - 148,000 (2010).

Food
Mainly fish with a few invertebrates, usually catching prey close to breeding colonies.

Voice
High-pitched, tremulous whistles 'piii piii' or 'more rapid 'pi pi pi' or 'chi chi chi' at colonies.
