First Described (Guide)
(Bruch, 1853)

Habitat
Cliffs. In winter, pelagic. Occasionally seen in harbors in the comapny of other gulls.

Range (Guide)
Canada (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), USA (B).

Vagrant to Japan.

Bering Sea, in Commander Is, Pribilof Is (St Paul I, St George I) and Aleutians (Buldir I, Bogoslof I). Winters widely over northern Pacific.
 
Population
Estimated population is 100,000 - 499,999 (2010) and decreasing.

Voice
High-pitched squeal 'suweeer', similar to that of Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla).

Subspecies
Closely related to and partially sympatric with Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla), but no interbreeding known. Bones found in deposits on Kodiak I.

No subspecies.

Notes
Crespuscular, perhaps nocturnal forager over deep water.
