Habitat
Breeds in remote, wooded, upland bogs on gently sloping foothills and flat river terraces, mostly within the permafrost zone. Winters in freshwater marshes, wet grassland, coastal tidal flats and farmland.
China (mainland) (B) (NB) (P), Japan (NB) (P), Mongolia (B) (P), North Korea (NB) (P), Russia (Asian) (B), Russia (Central Asian), South Korea (NB) (P).
Vagrant to India (E) (NB), Kazakhstan, Taiwan (China) (NB).
South-eastern Russia and northern China. Winters mainly in southern Japan; also South Korea and central and eastern China.
Population
Estimated population is 2,500 - 9,999 (2010) and decreasing.
Status VU
Wetland loss and degradation in its wintering grounds due to reclamation for development and dam building, conversion to agricultue, pollution, poisoining, human disturbance, and hunting are the main threats.
