Subspecies
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
meena (Sykes, 1832) - Southern part of western Siberia to western Altai, south to Turkestan, Iran, Afghanistan, Kashmir and Himalayas east to western Nepal. Winters mainly in India.
orientalis (Latham, 1790) - Central Siberia through Transbaikalia, Amurland and Sakhalin to Kuril Is, Japan and Korea, and south through much of China to Himalayas, northern Assam, Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan and northern Vietnam. Winters in southern and eastern Asia.
stimpsoni (Stejneger, 1887) - Ryukyu Is (Amami-oshima south to Senkaku Is).
orii Yamashina, 1932 - Taiwan.
erythrocephala (Bonaparte, 1855) - Peninsular India.
agricola (Tickell, 1833) - North-eastern India (Bihar, Orissa, Bengal, southern Assam) east to Myanmar (south to Tenasserim) and south-central China (western Yunnan, Hainan).
