Japan, from Honshu south to Shikoku, Kyushu, Yakushima and Tanegashima, and including offshore islands of Tobishima, Awashima, Sado and Tsushima.

Estimated population is unknown (2010).

Subspecies
Three subspecies often recognized: large and pale awokera (Honshu and nearby islands), smaller and darker horii (Shikoku, Kyushu, Tsushima) and smallest and darkest takatsukasae (Tanegashima, Yakushima). These, however, simply reflect a cline of decreasing size and increasing plumage darkness from north to south, and division into geographical subspecies seems unjustified.

The following 3 subspecies are recognised:

awokera Temminck, 1836 - Japan (Honshu to Tanegashima and offshore islands).
horii Taka-Tsukasa, 1918 - Kyushu, Shikoku (southern Japan).
takatsukasae Kuroda, Nagamichi, 1921 - Tanegashima, Yakushima (southern Japan).
