Habitat
Breeds in wetlands in the steppe and forest-steppe zones, including river deltas, river valleys with meadows, the margins of brackish and freshwater lakes, mountainous areas along narrow, fast-flowing rivers. In winter, lowland lakeside marshes, rice-fields, estuaries and tidal flats.

China (mainland) (B) (NB), Japan (NB), Kazakhstan (B), Mongolia (B), North Korea (NB), Russia (Asian) (B), South Korea (NB), Taiwan (China) (NB).

Vagrant to Laos, Russia (Central Asian), Thailand, Uzbekistan.

North-central Asia from south-central Siberia to northern China.

Population
Estimated population is 60,000 - 80,000 (2010) and decreasing.

Status VU
Habitat loss and degradation due to conversion to agriculture, drainage, cattle grazing and hunting are the main threats.

Voice
A prolonged, resounding honk, ending at higher pitch. Also, repeated, short, harsh notes uttered in alarm.
