Estimated population is unknown (2010) and decreasing.

Status NT
Hunting and habitat loss, predation by feral cats and dogs, and hybridisation (of the five subspecies) between wild and captive-reared stock are the main threats.

Subspecies
Intergrades between different subspecies reported. Thus, subspecies intermedius and subrufus may be synonymous with subspecies scintillans. Hybridization with Green Pheasant (Phasianus versicolor) occasionally recorded in the wild, the offspring being infertile.

The following 5 subspecies are recognised:

scintillans (Gould, 1866) - Northern and central Honshu, Japan.
intermedius (Kuroda, Nagamichi, 1919) - South-western Honshu and Shikoku, Japan.
subrufus (Kuroda, Nagamichi, 1919) - South-eastern and south-western Honshu and south-western Shikoku, Japan.
soemmerringii (Temminck, 1830) - Northern and central Kyushu, Japan.
ijimae (Dresser, 1902) - South-eastern Kyushu, Japan.
