Subspecies
Some specimens of nominate subspecies along Red Sea coast indistinguishable from ernesti so variation may be clinal.
Proposed subspecies aegra (western and central Sahara) synonymized with nominate.
The following 3 subspecies are recognised:
leucopyga (Brehm, 1855) - Western and central Sahara east to Egypt and Sudan, Eritrea and Djibouti.
ernesti Meinertzhagen, R, 1930 - Southern Israel, southern Jordan and north-eastern Egypt (Sinai) south to central and eastern Arabia and Yemen.
aegra Hartert, E, 1913 - Rocky deserts of Mauritania to Tunisia.
