Breeds southern Canada from extreme southern District of MacKenzie east to Great Slave L and north-eastern British Columbia, and central and northern Alberta, east to Ontario (southern from northern shore of L Superior), southern Quebec (south of c. 49º) and south-eastern Newfoundland, southern in USA to north-eastern North Dakota, eastern South Dakota, north-eastern Nebraska, north-central Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and inland at higher altitudes to extreme northern Georgia. Migrates to region from north-eastern and western Mexico (from south-western Tamaulipas and Nayarit) south through Central America to Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, rarely east to Guyana; also West Indies (mostly Bahamas, Cuba, Cayman Is) and sparingly Bermuda.

In the past, this species and Black-headed Grosbeak (Pheucticus melanocephalus) sometimes placed in a separate genus, Hedymeles. The two have been thought to form a superspecies, and frequently considered conspecific. They hybridize in overlap zone east of Rocky Mts.
