Habitat
Inland wetlands, including marshes, swamps, larger freshwater lakes. From sea-level - 2,600 m.
Argentina, Aruba, Bahamas, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, French Guiana, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica (B), Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, Uruguay (NB), USA (B), Venezuela, Virgin Islands (British) (NB), Virgin Islands (U.S.) (NB).
Vagrant to Dominica.
Population
Estimated population is 14,000 - 140,000 (2010).

Subspecies
Subspecies brachyrhynchus synonymous with speciosus. Birds from western Ecuador sometimes placed in separate subspecies eisenmanni.
The following 6 subspecies are recognised:
- dominicus (Linnaeus, 1766) - Northern Caribbean, from Cozumel I (off south-eastern Mexico) to Virgin Is and north to Bahamas.
- brachypterus (Chapman, 1899) - West-central Mexico and southern Texas south to Panama.
- bangsi (van Rossem & Hachisuka, 1937) - Southern Baja California.
- speciosus (Lynch Arribálzaga, 1877) - Southern America, south to northern Argentina and southern Brazil.
- brachyrhynchus (Chapman, 1899) - Tropical northern South America to southern Brazil and northern Argentina.
- eisenmanni Storer & Getty, 1985 - Coast of Ecuador; populations of north-western Peru presumably also this subspecies.
